Life as a Web Designer — The Job Interview

This is in continuation from the last post….

I began my hunt again and this time around, I came across an offer with a private company which was looking for candidates with web-design experience. This was it — my next breakthrough — I thought to myself.

I started preparing for the initial rounds of interview. We were supposed to have a telephonic round of interview and only the shortlisted candidates would be allowed for next round! They had a bunch of assignments which had to be done before the interview. The main purpose of these assignments was to test the basic coding skillset and tools knowledge of a candidate.

I had spent some sleepless nights — reviewing these assignments and working on them. This was like playing for a qualifying cricket match which I could not afford to lose at any cost. There was no turning back now.

Finally, it was the interview day! I was expecting a call around 10 in the morning. All other objects appeared to be of negligible interest to me except my mobile phone — at that point of time.

The phone rang at exactly 10 am and it was the interviewer talking with another set of panel members. We were all set. They started with a set of technical questions and I was ready for them. It was a great start! Then came the discussion about our assignment and I explained to them every phase of my submission in detail. They closed it off with one final question which was ‘Why should we choose you’ — and I spoke about my prior experiences, the role that I was aspiring to take and how it could benefit their company in the longer run.

The interview went well — at least as per my best judgement and the results were expected in a few days.

It’s funny when sometimes — time flies by so fast that you don’t even realize it and quite to the contrary, there are times when its hard to spend your time. You can look at the clock the whole time day long — waiting for seconds to pass by — like they are hours and even days and I had a similar experience waiting for my results :-/

I waited for a couple of days but had not received any response so far … This made me worry and I decided to make that call — to enquire whether or not I had made it — I had prepared myself to digest the worst-case scenario — just in case!

The next moment I was talking to one of the project managers in the company — and she told me to hold the line — perhaps she wanted to confirm one final time. She spoke to someone and then a few minutes later, she told me — ‘You have made it. Congrats!’.

This was it… The moment I had been waiting for. I had finally made it… What a relief! That was a moment of joy and happiness in the real sense, I could feel the celebrations going all over in my mind!

All the efforts and turmoil had eventually paid off! I shared this news with my family and friends — and they were all very happy for me!! What a moment I had in my life — especially after losing my internship opportunity.

The next thing I knew — I was preparing to fly to Bangalore — away from my home — away from my family — tickets had been booked and my luggage was ready — I was on a new Mission!

To be continued…..
